The Credit Bank Apartment Building

Alternative Namen: The General Hungarian Credit Bank / The General Hungarian Credit Bank

Adresse 2 Coriolan Brediceanu Str. Fertigstellungsdatum 1912 Hauptarchitekturstil Art Nouveau/Secession Architekt László Székely

Until the beginning of the 20th century, on the site of the current building used to stand one of the oldest churches in Timișoara. Built by the Franciscan Order in 1733-1736 in Baroque style, the edifice was brought down in 1911 because of its structural deterioration, but also because it was in the way of a new planned boulevard.

In its place, the city’s chief architect, László Székely, designed a three-storey apartment building in the style of the 1900s, more precisely Hungarian Secession. The building stands out for its richly decorated corner tower, for the playfulness of the volumes of the roof and pediments, as well as for the detailed ornaments, such as the small hearts that decorating the balconies’ ironwork. Another defining element are the two bas-reliefs located left and right of the entrance to the building, at the first floor level.
