The Library of the Romanian Academy
The former Wellauer house was demolished in 1886, with the present building raised in its place to serve as headquarters of the South Hungary Historical and Archeological Museum Society at the initiative of its founder, Ormós Zsigmond. The eclectic-historicist building is typical of late 19th-century architecture and bears multiple references to ancient Greek culture, the owner's main passion. The bronze statue of Athena stands out particularly, being framed by engaged columns and Renaissance-style window pediments, the silhouette of the entire building being reminiscent of ancient temples. Details such as the massive oak door, with its fine wrought-iron ornaments, the flag holders, and the light fixtures all bear the style of the architect Jakab Klein.
