On the left bank of the Bega Canal, near current Ștefan cel Mare Bridge, is the Kudelich-Sailer Palace, a large-scale building with a storefront and two upper stories. Finished in 1902, the building was one of architect Martin Gemeinhardt’s first creations and owes its appeal to its monumental proportions and the rhythm created by its oversized pediments. The dominant compositional element however is the palace's corner tower, circular and with a conical roof that ends in a decorative finial. The presence of the anchor as an ornamental motif on the tower and the existence of a restaurant named The Golden Anchor gave the building the nickname of The Anchor Palace, but its ties to Timișoara’s nautical history do not end there, as the palace was built where the former Navigational Office of Timișoara’s Commercial Harbour used to be.
